The Start-Up Grant program aids in the recruitment of biomedical research-oriented/active faculty to any NH-INBRE-associated institution, other than the Lead institute, Dartmouth College (including the Geisel School of Medicine). INBRE start-up funding requires a match of the institutional funding of start-up packages (50:50 match up to $25K) for newly recruited faculty who are serious about conducting biomedical research and whose research interests fit within our themes. Receiving NH-INBRE startup support obligates new faculty members who receive this funding to submit, within a year following the hire date, either a grant proposal in response to one of the NH-INBRE FOA/requests (for Pilot, Seed, or TIG grants), or submit a research application to an external funding agency for to its relevant deadline.
Institutions can obtain tentative approval for NH-INBRE start-up support of eligible new faculty by providing a copy of the proposed recruitment listing to NH-INBRE. With such early INBRE leadership engagement, this process provides assurance that the type of faculty recruit being sought, and who may be eligible for NH-INBRE support, is likely to be present in the pool of candidates responding to the listing. However, it is recognized that not all applicants, even those who may be interviewed, will eventually be deemed qualified for NH-INBRE support, and, of course, institutions are free to hire whomever they decide is best for their overall missions.
Final approval is determined after an expedited review by NH-INBRE leadership, of the proposed hire’s CV, a brief research statement that includes an overview of the candidate’s research interests, and an indication of the future direction(s) of research. The institution’s NH-INBRE RSTG PI/Steering Committee (SC) Member, and any other relevant institutional official(s), must provide a (single) letter of nomination, including a description of the teaching responsibilities, the outfitted lab space, and a budget breakdown specifically identifying both the budget items for the 50:50 INBRE match, and any other institutional support of equipment, shared service support, etc. that goes beyond the INBRE match. Providing this information is supplied to INBRE leadership in a timely way, INBRE approval can be made prior to the institution’s finalization of the negotiating/hiring decision process.
NH-INBRE start-up support funding is restricted to equipment and supplies necessary for initiating research programs by new faculty in appropriate areas of biomedical science.
